Microdermabrasion is a skin rejuvenating treatment that has become very popular as a way of improving skin texture, making it appear more youthful and healthier. It is particularly suited to those who have had acne or are looking for a blackhead treatment or who are feeling that their skin is beginning to show the signs of aging such as lines and superficial wrinkles or sun damage and uneven skin tone.

Microdermabrasion cannot treat such things as birth marks or tattoos and it will not remove deep wrinkles or scarring. However, it can be a great alternative to a more invasive treatment called a chemical peel – in fact microdermabrasion is sometimes referred to as a “lunchtime peel” as it only takes from between thirty to sixty minutes for a treatment. More excitingly, there are now microdermabrasion products on the market that can be used at home without the expense of salon or dermatologist treatments.

What is microdermabrasion?

In microdermabrasion, the skin is jetted or ‘blasted’ with very fine crystals, often aluminium oxide crystals which strip away the dead outer skin cells revealing the younger skin cells underneath. These surface skin cells are dead (rather like the hard skin you can remove from your feet with a pumice stone) and do not have a blood or nerve supply so the treatment does not cause any bleeding or pain.

By removing the top layer of dead cells, the formation of new skin cells deep down in the lower layers of your skin is encouraged. For people who have suffered from acne and blackheads, it is a great treatment as by removing the top layer and clearing pores of surface debris, future breakouts are inhibited.

What happens in a microdermabrasion treatment?

Typically, if this is your first treatment, your beautician or dermatologist will explain the procedure to you – this will only take a few moments as it is a completely non-invasive treatment. First of all, your skin will be cleansed and toned to remove any excess oil in the skin’s surface.

The crystals are delivered to your skin in a tool or wand that the beautician will pass over your face, concentrating on the main areas of damage. This only takes around half an hour, after which, a soothing toning lotion is applied followed by a moisturising cream.

After your treatment, your skin will feel a little strange, almost as if you have a mild case of sunburn and may look a little pinker than normal - but don’t worry, this is completely natural and you should continue to apply plenty of moisturiser to help rehydrate your skin and enable the dead skin cells that have been loosened by the procedure to be shed naturally. Do not use any other form of exfoliating treatment for several days after your microdermabrasion treatment.

A Microdermabrasion Treatment

How often do I need to have the treatment?

Microdermabrasion can be a one-off treatment, but best results are obtained if you have a course of treatments followed by a maintenance treatment every month or so. Your beautician will advise what is the best plan for you when she has evaluated your skin condition and type and the amount of sun damage, aging or unevenness.

Microdermabrasion is not suitable for people with some medical conditions such as diabetes that is not properly controlled, auto-immune problems or acne that is weeping. Your beautician or dermatologist will ensure that microdermabrasion is safe for you.

Typical Customer Product Review

"I've been eying this product for a while, but wasn't sure I wanted to pay the price. I finally broke down and purchased it, and am so glad I did! The vibrating sensation feels really good on my face, and after using it, my face feels so smooth and silky, with a nice healthy glow to it. The air is very dry where I live, so I do put a moisturizer on afterwards. I don't have many crow's feet lines yet, but it does seem to slightly improve the appearance of them. The only negative is that the rejuvenating puffs are one-time use only (or, supposed to be). I am pretty frugal and actually push it and get 2 to 3 uses out of each pad.

I would recommend this Neutrogena product!"

Home Microdermabrasion

It is now possible to purchase microdermabrasion machines to use in your own home. These give you the opportunity to save money on salon treatments and enjoy your treatment as often as you wish in the privacy of your own home.

The most popular of these home treatment kits on Amazon.com and which gets an excellent customer feedback rating is the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator Kit which claims to be even more effective than a professional microdermabrasion treatment and yet gentle enough to be used up to three times a week. It works by massaging the skin with single use puffs (these are relatively inexpensive to purchase as refill packs) and these exfoliate the surface of the skin.

There are four simple steps, each of the puffs is filled with ultra-fine crystals and mild purifiers. The puffs are attached to the head of the hand held machine and wetted thoroughly. Each area of the face is then massaged for up to two minutes. The micro-vibrations generated by the massaging action boost circulation and oxygenation to the skin and stimulate increased cell turnover.

Clinical studies conducted for Neutrogena by dermatologists have shown that the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator works to decrease pore size which is vital in helping to control acne and as a blackhead treatment. It also works on wrinkles and age spots, making your skin softer and firmer and helping to keep it that way. Neutrogena claim that this system is more effective than professional microdermabrasion because you are able to use it more frequently and continually build on the results achieved. This product requires two AA batteries which are included in the pack.
