Hubpages Back Links How To Establish A Backlink Strategy to Increase Traffic

Link building, getting links or backlinks back to your hubpages hubs, is a very useful method to ensure that your hubs receive the best possible volume of traffic for the subject matter covered and keywords contained. I have been a member of the HubPages community for a little over three months at the time of writing. I have been trying to learn from other, more experienced Hubbers and to read articles and glean information from elsewhere on the web. After what felt an eternity of ‘dithering’ when I could not make up my mind what was the best way to do things, I have now developed a clear strategy for Keyword Research and for Back Links Building. I now feel a lot happier because I have a strategy that seems to work (for me at least) and I am seeing my traffic steadily increase, week on week.

Build Links

Building lots of links will help you to earn more from your Hubs

Get Organized And Get On With It!

The thing about link building is that it can be incredibly time consuming. I have had to refine my method as my number of hubs increases as I want to spend time researching and writing hubs, not doing boring bookmarking!

So here is what I do to promote and build links and backlinks to my hubs - I needed to get organized, stop 'faffing about', getting nothing done, get a system together to semi-automate my link building and GET ON WITH IT!

My Backlink Strategy

1. First of all, I have now decided that I will not publish a new hub immediately I finish it but will take time refining it, going back and editing it and getting it to be as good as I can get it before publication. The added benefit of this is that a Hub published immediately starts out with a score of 50, if I can keep going back and editing that Hub, I can get it’s starting hubscore up before it gets published, thus giving it a bit of a head-start.

2. Secondly, I use the share this button at the bottom of each hub, to promote the hub on twitter when I publish it. If it is a topical article, or becomes topical (like my hub on the link between gum disease and heart disease), I put out several tweets a day about that hub which has produced good results for me. I was bookmarking to Reddit and Stumbleupon and Digg too - now I just usually use stumbleupon and the Tweet and Like buttons at the top of the page under the title.

Save Time, Get Organized!

USE A SPREADSHEET TO SEMI-AUTOMATE YOUR LINK BUILDING

I have now set up a spreadsheet to semi-automate my link building and speed up the process of submitting to other sites. I have set it up like this:-

a. Put the URL of each new HubPage in the first column, (the URL of each Hub is the http:// followed by hubpage.com/hub/your-new-new-hub-name and this appears in your browser window at the top of your screen when you are on the page of your hubpage hub. I use this URL when submitting to sites that will not accept a URL for a Hubpages page with the Referral code (your Hubpages URL tracker code) inserted.

b. Put the URL of each new Hubpage in the second column but this time including your tracker code as some bookmarking sites will accept it. See my hub Generate Income with Your HubPages URL Tracker Code for how to do this. I do this because, if a visitor comes to my hub from this bookmark including the URL tracker code, then goes off and joins hubpages or clicks on an ad in another hub they choose to visit, I will get the benefit of the new signup and a share of any adsense revenue for the first 120 minutes of the visit.

c. I then put the title of my hub in column three, a brief description in column four and the tags (keywords to help visitors find my hubs) in column five. I do try to vary the title and the description in my manually submitted bookmarks, but having a template like this, saves having to start from scratch every time. Make sure not to copy something directly out of your hub to use as your description, try to have somthing unique.

d. Then, I put the name of the Bookmarking sites I want to submit to as the column headings and use the ‘Lock titles function’ to keep these column headings and my first five columns with all the information in, visible all the time. This is easy to do in excel and if you are not sure just type lock titles into the help section and it will show you exactly how to do it.

e. Then, each time I add a bookmark, I just mark it off as done on my spreadsheet – which is very satisfying and you can just copy and paste from your spreadsheet into the bookmarking sites which speeds up the process. NOTE be careful about the keywords though, some sites only take space separated keywords, some comma separated.

Great New Free Bookmarking Tool

Update: I have come back to edit this hub to let you know about this great tool I have come across that lets you submit 25 FREE Backlinks a day.

There is also a paid service for a one time fee of $47 that gives you so much more but for now, I am just glad of the 25 Free links.

Social Monkee is easy to use, especially if you have Firefox installed and download the plugin which is a cute little monkee face you click on when you are on a page you want to bookmark.

Updated Bookmarking and Backlinking Strategy

Update 17th November 2010

Since I originally published this hub, I have changed my strategy a bit and made some refinements.

What I am trying to do now is to bookmark ALL my hubs, but put the most effort into the ones that appear in the top twenty of Google after a few days.

So, what I do to start with is to put bookmarks on the following sites:(If you want to read a hub that has an exhaustive list of social bookmarking sites, go to The Top Bookmarking Sites That Can Drive High Traffic)

1. My first site for bookmarks is She Told Me. This is a site well worth using as not only is the site a 100% adsense sharing site so you can pick up a little extra income, but also gets great rankings in google for hubpages hubs. Please see my Hub - Increase Traffic to Your Hubs, Create Links on She ToldMe.

2. My second site is Xomba, this is also an adsense revenue sharing site and some days, this gives my adsense earnings, a nice little boost.

3. My third site is Delicious which is not a revenue sharing site but being a PR8 site, is a good one to get your hub a link from.

4. My fourth site is Snipsly which is a revenue sharing site and again has brought me some income.

5. My fifth site is Seekyt this is growing all the time and you can now set it up so that your RSS feed from Seekyt automatically publishes your posts on Digg which is absolutely brilliant - two for the price of one - and, as everyone knows, a Digg backlink is quite valuable!

Now, what I do next may have purists throwing up their hands - and if the idea of any sort of article spinning upsets you, do not read this next bit!

I have downloaded a free spinner from the internet - you can get it here http://www.spinningwizard.com/

What I do with this is two things

1. For the short bookmarks above, I write a one paragraph bookmark in short sentences. I paste this into SpinWizard and use this to rewrite each sentence twice. I then spin this to vary the text that I put into each of the sites above and IMAutomator (mentioned below). I also vary the titles for each one and use my spreadsheet just to paste in the keywords I have saved so that I do not have to keep doing this each time.

Now, for the Hubs that are doing well in the rankings to start with.

For Hubs that show promise (in other words, I have got my keyword research right!), I write a completely new article based on my Hubpages Article. I post this to Ezine with links back to my hub - if I have written more than one article on a similar theme, I use the Ezine articles resource box that allows you to have two links to place one link for one hub and one for another.

Now, I edit this article, changing the sentence structure (making sure my sentences are short) and change the paragraph order to make it different. I then use SpinWizard as above to create a spun article with each sentence rewritten twice.

IMPORTANT UPDATE ABOUT BUKISA December 2010

Bukisa has now changed from paying by page impressions (which in my case resulted in only a £2 or so over several months) to an adsense revenue sharing scheme like HubPages. I added my adsense details a couple of weeks ago and have already earned more than in the whole of my time under the previous scheme so Bukisa could well turn out to be a nice little earner too!

I use the spin feature on SpinWizard to create a new article which I submit to Bukisa. I may also use this longer article instead of a bookmark on any of the bookmarking sites mentioned above. if I have time, I may also use this method to submit to GoArticles and any of the other higher PR article directories.

Why I joined ArticleRanks for Article Submissions

I have joined an article submissions service called ArticleRanks (update 16th February, I am no longer using this paid service for article submission - however the articles I created are still in the system and still being trickled out to blogs and sites, earning backlinks for my hubs and other pages) go to www.articleranks.com to check them out.

I have found Article Ranks excellent, I submit the article I have spun with spinwizard with about ten different titles (you can also spin the titles in spinwizard or you can add the extra ones in ArticleRanks) and include links back to my hubpages articles. I think this service is well worth the small monthly fee (doing it this way is much cheaper than the pay as you go method. I like it better than Unique Article Wizard which I have also tried and it is cheaper.

Article Ranks trickles out your articles (so link building is more natural and not all at once!) and goes on doing so until you tell it to stop. It even goes on doing so with articles you have submitted if you cancel your subscription for any reason.

I use the Rank Tracker section of Market Samurai - mentioned below, to see how my hubs are doing in the rankings for the keyword phrases I am targeting.

IMAutomator

I have become a member of IMAutomator. If you read my hub (see link below), you will know about IMAutomator. You can still have a free account there and you get your bookmarks submitted to randomly selected sites from their list of submission sites. The full list is currently at 31 (as at 17th November 2010 and ). If you are a free member, you get ten bookmarks a day so you could put ten hubs on each day or ten other web pages or URL addresses or blog posts ..... The great thing about IMAutomator is that it trickles the links out at a rate you choose, one a day or one every few days, you don’t get all your links going out at once and this is a much more natural link building profile from the search engine point of view. This is important for small sites just starting out but for hubpages articles I usually choose the links over 6 days option.

Do Follow and No Follow Backlinks

Obviously, the most valuable backlinks are Do Follow as they link back to your site (although I have read that some No Follow Backlinks in the mix make the links you have created look more natural). However, when it comes to commenting on Blogs, or Forums or Social Bookmarking sites in an effort to increase the rankings of your hub or other webpage, there is not much point spending too much time and effort creating links that turn out to be nofollow! I recently downloaded Mozilla Firefox as an alternative browser to Internet Explorer and have found that there are quite a few addons. One useful one is a little extension that you can install and turn on or off in the toolbar as you wish. What it does is highlight links on a page and if they are pink, they are no follow, if they are blue, they are do follow - so for example if you go to a forum and want to know if the links in posts are do follow or no follow, turn the tool on and they will be coloured. If all the links in replies are no follow, you would probably be better spending your time leaving a post on a forum that has do follow links. The tool is called NoDoFollow and you can download it to your Firefox browser from the link provided.

GET FREE BACKLINKS, PROMOTE YOUR HUBS WITH ARTICLE MARKETING

See the 17th November 2010 update above on Article Marketing.

Article marketing to promote your Hubs involves writing short articles about the topic of your hub and submitting it to an article directory with your keywords (tags) as backlinks. Make sure you write UNIQUE content, do not, whatever you do, copy a portion of your hub as a short article. It MUST be original content. If you can then submit to Ezine, Squidoo, Info Barrel or similar, you will be getting what is basically a free advertisement for your hub. Leave the reader wanting more information so that they feel they want to find out more – although the article must be complete in itself.

Ezine articles is an example of a directory that does not allow you to put your links in the body of the article. Instead, you must create your links in the resource box and to do this, you must create an anchor text html hyperlink - which is a lot easier to do than it sounds - if you click the link you will be taken to my hub which has step by step instructions on how to create one and use it to promote your hubs!

I have created my own article directory How Do I Find Out How To (named because 'how do I' has become a sort of nick-name for me - especially since I started trying to make some money on the internet!) Any Hubber who would like to submit articles with links back to their hubs are very welcome to do so (you can read the article submission guidelines on the site). My thanks to those hubbers who have supported my site and now have articles there, linking back to hubs.

Write short articles elsewhere with links to your Hubs.

USE IMAutomator

If you are a paid member of IMAutomator, you get your hubs submitted to all 47 sites and can submit 25 bookmarks each day. There are so many new features coming to IMAutomator that I definitely recommend you check it out. It cost just under $25 dollars a month (about £18 at the current exchange rate) and new members joining now will have this price frozen for the lifetime of their membership, no matter how many new features are added or how much the price goes up in the future. I wrote a Hub about IMAutomator earlier this year which is now a little out of date.

Update on IMAutomator 14th August 2011

I decided at the beginning of this month to stop my paid subscription to IMA because even as a paid member the number of bookmarking sites submitted to had dropped down to 27 (most of these not well known 'mainstream' sites - I felt that I now get better results using a combination of the free bookmarking from IMA, paid bookmarking from SocialAdr and using SocialMonkee (www.socialmonkee.com). SocialAdr is a very clever concept as you can get your bookmarks posted for you by other people which makes for greater diversity.

SocialAdr can give some benefit for free as if you sign up and link your social bookmarking accounts with other sites, you just need to press one button for quick share, to get five free credits and you can do this every day. Then you can exchange these free credits for getting your own bookmarks posted. In practice, I buy 1,000 credits at a time for what I feel is a very reasonable price and top this up with my 'quick shares'. You can read about the free and paid accounts and top up credits by using the link provided. This is my affiliate link so if you prefer not to credit me with a sale, go direct to the socialadr site.

IMAutomator allows you to submit bookmarks to 47 sites

USE RSS FEEDS TO PROMOTE HUBS

The next way I use to drive traffic to my Hubs is with RSS feeds. Hub pages automatically gives you an RSS feed for your latest hubs, you can access it on your profile page by clicking the subscribe to link next to the orange RSS button. The address of the RSS feed comes up in your browser window.

Mine is http://hubpages.com/author/Alison+Graham/latest/?rss

If you use IMAutomator as a paid member, you can submit this RSS feed there. In which case, it is submitted to 10 RSS feed sites. If you do not subscribe to IMAutomator, you can manually submit it to RSS sites.

If you want to include an RSS feed in your hubs, you can link a group of hubs together by using a keyword common to the group. For example, I have some hubs on lawnmowers (yes, really!). Because lots of other people probably have hubs on lawnmowers too, I do not want to include their hubs in my RSS feed so I need to make sure it is specific to me.

My lawnmower RSS feed will be http://hubpages.com/author/Alison+Graham/petrol+lawnmower/latest/?rss

So if you want to do one for yourself for a group of your hubs, use

http://hubpages.com/author/yourusername/yourkeyword/latest/?rss

Not forgetting to put in the + sign if your user name or keyword (tag) is more than one word.

There are many benefits to linking hubs this way – read Edweirdo’s brilliant hub about it

http://hubpages.com/hub/Promote-Your-Older-Hubs-Using-Tags-To-Create-Custom-RSS-Feeds

It’s all about promoting your older hubs/under performing hubs by linking them with newer/better performing hubs!

If you create some RSS feeds this way, you can submit these too, but don’t go mad and submit loads at once, trickle them out!

If you want to know where to submit your RSS feeds once you have made them, go to the EPIC Hub by Sunforged who always writes such brilliant and helpful information. In this one, (see link below), he has made it even more helpful by producing a huge list of links to the actual page on the site where you enter your RSS URLs!!

RSS Submission Sites list - Use RSS submission sites to get traffic

Time-saving Tip

When you create your RSS Feed URLs, paste them all into an application like notepad and save it on your computer. Then, what I like to do is to go to one of the addresses on the list by Sunforged and copy and paste them one at a time into that submission site. It saves so much time! Then, after a day or two, I do the process again with another site on the list!

Update 30th September 2010. I have come back to this hub to add that I have now got my http://www.feedagg.com account for RSS feeds set up to publish all new posts to my Twitter account. I have done this for my other sites too and I like this option.

COMMENT ON OTHER HUBS

Leaving comments on hubs you have enjoyed reading is another great way to promote your own hubs. How?  Your user name is a clickable link back to your profile page.  Other people reading the comments and the author of the hub may very possibly click on the link to your profile and have a look at your hubs.  They may decide to link one of their related hubs to one of yours which is great.

PARTICIPATE IN THE FORUMS

Leaving a comment in the forums on HubPages has the same effect as commenting on other hubs.

Leaving a comment in forums on other sites may also provide you with the opportunity to link back to your hubs.  I have only done this once, so far with hub on car boot sales  where I put a single comment on a forum on a site called Car Boot Junction.  This site has sent 70 visitors to that Hub alone since I did so and the visitors have looked at my profile and some other hubs too.

You can also comment on blogs on relevant topics.  This is not a strategy I have exploited yet as I just have not had time to do so.  However, provided that you are polite, leave a relevant comment that adds something to the article itself, your comment may well be approved and give you the opportunity to gain a link back to your Hub(s).

CREATE LINKS TO OTHER RELEVANT HIGH QUALITY HUBS

If you do this, you not only increase the likelihood of other hubbers linking to your hubs, but you also get the opportunity of inserting your URL tracker in the link which enables you to benefit from a share of any adsense revenue generated by the visitor who clicks that link during the next 120 minutes.

I am sure that there are lots of other things I could be doing as well as those outlined in this Hub. I am also certain that there are things I am doing wrong. But the important thing from my point of view is that I am doing something. It is so easy to get so 'bogged down' with all the information that there is available. Much of it is conflicting and I was feeling that my head was going to explode with trying to assimilate it all.

So, I decided that I would just have to make up my mind, decide what to do, devise my own strategy and stick to it. Of course, I am learning how to work smarter, not harder, not to spend time on things that do not get me anywhere. I have a few Hubbers whose work has inspired and informed me - I have my heros but won't embarrass them by mentioning their names here!

I am not just burying my head in the sand now that I have a strategy though. I am open to new ideas and am trying to spend some time each day reading some information, or watching a video that could help me to do better. I am hoping for some excellent critical comments on this hub from other Hubbers! I am serious about building an income online and am loving HubPages as a place to do just that!

On thing that is brilliant about hubpages is that if you work at the backlinking and your hub has good information and is viewed by Google as being somewhere that a reader is going to get great value and information, you will be rewarded with good page rank. This hub, for example is currently at pr 5 - what this enables you to do is to use the hub to provide a link to help other hubs or other sites you are building. I am currently trying to improve my ranking for the phrase pop up displays on my website about trade shows and trade show stands so a dofollow link from a pr5 page is going to help me out there!

UPDATE

I just wanted to let you know that I have started using Posterous to creat backlinks too. I have been doing the Challenge 2010 and this is one of the methods they have taught this year. I have found it quite easy to set up with the excellent video instructions and can send an email to Posterous to autopost my content with a backlink (or backlinks) to wherever I choose (hubpages or other web pages) - anyway, I hope you will check it out, it is FREE!

I also wanted to tell you that I am using Shane Melaugh's Backlink Battleplan. This is a course I have purchased, I think it is excellent value for money as it shows you how to get all your backlinks using only FREE resources online. It has easy to follow video tutorials and helpful stuff to download and I have found it very user friendly as he explains everything really well. It really is very good and there is a link on my profile page if you want to find out more. The link I have provided is my affiliate link so you could go direct to Shane's website, imimpact.com if you prefer.

Do Not Let The Huge Amount Of Information Available Overwhelm You

It is easy when first starting out to get overwhelmed by all the information available - especially as quite a lot of it seems to be conflicting. Work out what you want to do and formulate your own backlink strategy do your keyword research and make the most of the wonderful free help and advice that is a tremendous resource in the forums here on hubpages from people who have probably forgotten more than I will ever know and are 'walking the walk', not just 'talking the talk'! I've had this page in my bookmarks for quite some time now and never got the chance to read it in detail (which I finally did :)) I appreciate people who take the time and effort to write really useful content and help other writers in the community. I'll check out your article directory any time soon. I just wanted to add that Seekyt is no longer a bookmarking site; a few days ago the admin informed everybody that external links are turned into nofollow links because people continued using the site for easy backlinks (which produced a lot of low-quality content on the site and a regular flow of spammers). I'm OK with this decision because I think that Seekyt is worth the time and effort to write original content and make money while doing it!

Good luck with your hubbing, glad to hear that you have drawn the same conclusions as myself with regard to backlinks building. With regard to choosing niches or micro niches, I have chosen to build websites rather than creating them here on hubpages. So far that strategy is turning out to be more profitable - but a lot of work!

dablufox profile image

Excellent hub, I have learned all of this through experimenting myself and stealing snippets from other experienced hubbers like yourself.

It goes without saying you really have to productive and be prepared to do a lot of writing and reading. I love the spreadsheet idea and in fact I though about doing this for myself just to keep track and record my backlinks.

I love seekyt, mainly because the content gets indexed within 24 hours and provides an unusually high serps

ranking for new content.

The only thing I would add is that you be selective with your chosen nich, or rather micro niche. Hubpages is a perfect platform for micro niche marketing where you target very narrow niche markets which don't have overwhelming competition, of course this means selecting the right keyword phrase.

After reading your hub I feel I'm travelling in the right direction.

All the Best!

Voted up and ranked. It took me twice as long to get to the bottom of the comment link then it did to read your article. What an amazing response. I enjoyed your post, I've book marked it and will continue to use it as I build my hubpages. I've been trying to come up with a system to stream line my backlinks etc. I've just recently joined HubPages and I've come to learn that it's the Hubbers who have a long term focus that are successful. Thanks for giving me a great tool, this hub, to work from. Keep writing. saintodd

Hi Allison, there seems to be nothing to say as regards how excellent this hub is, one of the best I've read in a long while.

It'll take me a couple of months to assimilate everything.

If I might add or is it suggest, don't you think you should compile this info in ebook format and place it on ebook directories where users can download it for free?

This is so because this info can go more viral, and come to think of it useful information like this written in clear terms are hard to come by these days.

One more thing, you did not add friendfeed.com's service, where you can parse multiple feeds from sites where you write on a single interface.

Thanks Allison, you are one hell of a genius.

Hi douglas, I use IMAutomator to automate the social bookmarking side of things - everything else is done manually by me. Hi Pro Design Source. You could include your URL tracker in an external link to your own hub in case there was an opportunity to earn if the person who used your link then went on to other hubs and generated revenue through adsense there.

With regard to the URL tracker in an RSS feed, I think that is a question for the forums - I think you could but wonder if it would be rejected on submission as this could be seen as a 'redirect'

Pro Design Source profile image

Pro Design Source 17 months ago

Alison - Is there a way to insert your URL tracker to an RSS feed? (if you have more than just your articles in the rss feed)

Is it necessary to use your url tracker to link to your own hubs?

I use a lot of these same methods. I don't spend a lot of time social bookmarking just because in the years I've been doing it, rarely does it pan out. It's more of a "who you know" type of thing with most of those websites.

My biggest sources of traffic have been from outside links linking into the hub from blogs and other web 2.0 sites. Good advice!

hi Alison,

Thanks for your reply. I'll have to take another look at bookmarking, and at the specific sites you mention.

Alison Graham profile image

Alison Graham Hub Author 18 months ago

I agree that some bookmarking is of low value but on the other hand, it does have benefit from some sites - for example shetoldme and xomba where a) it is likely to get you a google ranking b) there is revenue sharing from adsense or c) from sites like Redgage and Delicious that bring quite a bit of traffic. I have also been reading that there is merit in getting no-follow bookmark or comment backlinks as if every single link you ever got was do-follow it would create an unnatural profile - but I am still trying to work that one out(?)

CarpetDiem profile image

CarpetDiem 18 months ago

hi Alison,

Wow. Monster size hub!

I've read that bookmarking doesn't have much effect (of course, I know one shouldn't believe everything one reads on the internet), but you list is as one of your main methods. Every page of your website will also have a different URL so u can submit each one. What I thought Glassy was suggesting was to submit each URL 15 times by changing the title and description. That won't work but it sounds like I misunderstood.

Alison Graham profile image

Alison Graham Hub Author 18 months ago

Hi Don, once an RSS feed has been submitted to a site, you usually cannot resubmit it (it comes up already in directory). Your new hubs will be inside the RSS feed when anyone looks at it. A way of using RSS to promote old hubs is to take a look at this hub http://hubpages.com/hub/HubPages-Promotion-RSS-Fee - create topic based RSS feeds, use that topic as a keyword in each of those hubs and use that keyword in a new RSS feed to submit (dont worry, the hub explains it much better than I just did!)

Don Simkovich profile image

Don Simkovich Level 3 Commenter 18 months ago

I'm going to ask a dumb question -- but I'm asking!!! I've submitted to a few of the RSS sites that Sunforged has listed. Do I have to resubmit each time I publish a new Hub, if I originally submitted my profile? Maybe I've missed the answer here or on his . . . and it might have to do with the way to submit old Hubs on the RSS feed.

Incidentally, just last week I started to use facebook and linkedin networking sites and am still trying to understand the best ways to use such sites for marketing hubs.

Many of your suggestions in this hub have given me much clarity and a "plan" to get started with link building. Being an absolute dummy in the art of link building, I will be keenly following your hubs.

Thanks very much.

Hi Glassy, I think we all agree with what you say about 'spam' - I think Sylvie has been talking about hubpages and of course each hub only has one URL so can only be submitted once via IMA.

Glassy profile image

In response to some comments here about SEO, yes im sure that when you bookmark your site, it will count as a link in some way or another, even if its - no follow or takes forever to get indexed, but i just wanted to recommend participating in these sites, even if you just do it once after you leave your bookmark.

This very site is a perfect example of a site which you must participate in to have a high score and keep those backinks, or am i wrong here?

I encourage Sylvie Strong to try and submit another page other than the index page in Im-Automator and tell me that it doesn't work. It works but some sites - not all, say duplicate url if it has already been submitted before and it wont go through for that day. Remember that there are 53 sites that the automator submits to and if it tries to submit to the same site and doesn't work, then it will move on to another site the next day.

And i agree that submitting your site to the same bookmarking site can be spammy, but if you use another page with a different description, then this makes it less spammy. Mixx is a perfect example of a bookmarking site that allows multiple pages of the same domain but not the same page twice.

Ok, i have fired the debate on this, correct me if im wrong, im learning just like everyone else.

Sylvie, Glassy may have a strategy for IMAutomator, but it is not mine - I set it, forget it and treat it as a bonus - because of the weak dollar I have got it locked in at a price of £18 per month and this seems good value to me, especially as this price is going to remain at that for the lifetime of my membership. With regard to editing submissions, if you try to submit the same URL again, as you know, you get an error message but you can edit both the title and the description - I don't bother with this at the moment but there is going to be a 'spinner' function in the future that will allow titles and description to be changed for each submission. I also agree with you about the bookmarks - it is not the case that they 'disappear' - although I have not been able to establish whether any revert to 'no follow' - however, many of the early sites that IMAutomator submitted to are now no longer in existence. Thanks for your great comment and I absolutely agree the strategy for IMA should be absolutely that, submit, forget, move on!

Alison Graham profile image

Alison Graham Hub Author 18 months ago

Thank you Rudra, I agree with what you say about the sites that IMAutomator submits to at the present time but, they are investigating submitting to what they term 'more mainstream' sites as part of the coming improvements to the service.

I must question Glassy's SEO advice. On what basis do you say that a bookmarking site will not provide you a backlink or make their site no-follow unless you get a vote from another member? I have never heard of any site doing that. Many of them certainly tire of people that spam them with bookmarking lots of their own sites, but they do not turn your backlink credit on and off for each particular user. I think the reason you are not seeing your backlinks appear is because they have not been indexed...that has nothing to do with whether someone else votes for your bookmark. They might ban you altogether...and this is why some hubbers suggest bookmarking sites you don't control as well.

Getting a friend to vote for your bookmark can be a strategy, but not for backlinks. The reason you might do this is to increase the bookmark's prominence on the site and drive traffic to it. People do this on Digg sometimes. The disadvantage of this strategy is that traffic from bookmarking sites is of low quality. This is why we generally use them mostly for the backlink. And for that purpose, having a second vote makes no difference. I also don't entirely understand Glassy's bookmarking strategy with IM Automator. That doesn't mean it is wrong...I just don't get it. IM Automator restricts you to one submission per URL. So if you change the description of a page, and submit it, IM Automator will not accept it. It is also an incredibly bad idea to try to submit the same URL more than once to a bookmarking site. Most will not even allow it but even the ones that do will see it as the spam it truly is. So IM Automator's restriction on multiple submissions of the same URL is really saving you from yourself.

I apologize if I misunderstand your strategy though...maybe you are suggesting something else. I think people sometimes put disproportionate effort into strategies that do not give them much link juice. Use IM Automator to get your free backlinks and move on. Don't waste a lot of time fine-tuning descriptions or anything else. That is time you can use getting other high quality backlinks from article directories or other social bookmarking. You could also just write another hub.

Rudra profile image

Rudra 18 months ago

Definitely the best article I have read so far as link building is concerned. I had a look at some of the sites imautomator send to, it seems of low quality and it seems expensive. But its definitely worth exploring the idea.

Some of the bookmarking sites are trying to stop spammers from just posting their link and not interacting in the site in any way and i have noticed that some don't show up as backlinks unless there are more then one vote.

Some are also nofollow and the reason they do this, is because they get fed up with the spam.

So in order to maximize your chance of getting your link counted and to make sure it stays that way for some time, i would recommend trying to get more than 1 vote, or voting on other peoples bookmarks so that you are more active in the site and have a less chance of being cleaned out if the webmaster gets sick of the spam, because after all, quality websites want active users and not one off spammers who drop their link and never return.

Surely if your link is on the site, it is a backlink however many votes it has (or do they revert to no-follow if no-one votes for them?)

It seems that some people here have no idea on how to submit their sites properly to IM Automator. The system is great, you just have to know how to use it.

Write a title and description for your home page, then do the same for 10 other sub-pages, making sure that the titles are all different.

Select the submit once per day over a period of 15 days (Don't get greedy and try and submit the same title over and over to all 15 at once) this wont work because the titles are all the same and its duplicate content all at once (Google hates this)

Now, every 24 hours, go into your descriptions and change the titles of all 10 of your pages and do this for 15 days.

Oh and another tip, go and log in to these bookmarking sites, using your own password and user name, so you can vote on your own site. The more votes a site has, the more chance of getting a backlink.

wonder what you can do about that. Nelle and others distinguish between "information" hubs, blogs, websites etc, and "selling" hubs, blogs, websites.

For information hubs all your going to earn is adsense revenue. For Selling hubs, one has to actually learn how to write to sell, from what ive read on the subject, which is another skill again.

Thanks for your comments Sylvie - with regard to my article directory, I only registered the domain at the end of May and started work on it about a month ago so it is PR0. I want original content because I cannot cope with a large quantity of submissions and want to retain editorial control to accept or reject.

dubturbo, thanks for your comment too and I would say that the backlinking is vital, it may be boring but it has to be done and I have found little and often is the best way!

dubturbo 18 months ago

I signed up for the free IMAutomator service. It takes only a few minutes to schedule submissions to 15 random social bookmarking websites. But the bookmarking sites are relatively unknown at least to me. The only exception was Mister Wong but that was in beta testing so I think there is no chance it will be one of the random sites picked. I guess one would have to submit that one manually for now. The service also does warn or indicate the limits to the length of the title and the description fields. So I think lengthy text might get truncated at the bookmarking sites without you knowing. If you knew in advance, you could at least change or adjust your title and description.

Thanks Alison for recommending this service so I can backlink my first hub automatically. I find the manual process boring and time consuming.

Sylvie Strong profile image

Sylvie Strong 18 months ago

Alison, I looked at your article directory and it looks promising. I am curious about the PR of the domain. Your submission of the articles to 47 sites using IM Automator is a good service for sure. The one downside for me is that you require original content...I normally publish my original content on Ezinearticles or Buzzle and then syndicate it to other directories that accept duplicate content if you are the author. Good luck.

Sylvie Strong profile image

Sylvie Strong 18 months ago

Alison, thank you for an informative hub. I too have been using ImAutomator (the free version). I believe the service is currently closed to new paying members. But before I become a paying member I would need to have a better understanding of the benefit from the site. IMAutomator is incredibly fast and easy to use, and you can throw 15 bookmarks at anything...your hubpages, your websites, your articles on article directories, etc. But IMAutomator will not tell you the PR of the sites they are submitting to. They say this is because PR is a constantly shifting metric...but that isn't precisely true. PR remains static until the next big Google revision and it would not be hard for the site to disclose the PRs of the sites it is currently submitting to. I like using IMAutomator because it takes little effort and I might as well because it is free...but am glad to see that you see some benefit from it. Good luck with your article directory...I will go check it out. BTW, what is the PR of the domain of your directory? Thanks.

Your article is just...well, just so informative I can't even begin to think how to comment on how good it is, just such useful good information.

I especially like your beginning where you speak of getting the difficult, tedious tasks in a manageable context.

The excel spreadsheet to keep track of your links is awesome. What you reveal is subtle but very much a part of running any site and it can leave you frustrated and ultimately neglect and procrastination can set into this one "niche" of running your site or hubs or whatever kind of online presence you are maintaining.

I call all of this the "Social Tech" that so many do not like to deal with. I am a big champion of organization, especially on the net; you have to be...you just have to be.

Anyway Thanks for such a helpful article. I have definitely bookmarked this in my SEO file.

Thanks for your comment dubturbo. Regarding IMAutomator, and duplicate content, they are working on an upgrade that will allow submission of different titles and descriptions that will be rotated but as far as your creating links for your hubpages content is concerned, you should ensure that you do not copy a paragraph out of your hub as your link description. I have read lots of conflicting things about duplicate content so I would not be able to advise you either way.

dubturbo profile image

I normally don't use bookmarking sites as I find the process rather dull. But I found your description of IMAutomator informative and might try it out, especially the free service because I can't seem to earn any decent income online. Thanks Alison for the recommendations.

I just saw the short video at IMAutomator and I think I will definitely try it out. But I guess as a free member, it will only submit to low PR social bookmarking sites. Do you know whether there is any problem with duplicate content using this tool? Because the title, description and tags are all the same for the sites submitted to. I think I read somewhere that you need to change or vary these when you submit to bookmarking sites to avoid duplicate content.

Hi 5institutes, thanks for your comment, I agree that it is not easy to measure that metric on a site such as hubpages. All I can report is that my traffic is increasing and that I have checked a random selection of the sites for different submissions and found that my bookmark is there and that the links work. With regard to the spinning of content for submission, I believe I am correct in saying that this is one of the things that is 'in the pipeline'.

5institutes profile image

5institutes 19 months ago

Your information is spot on. I've used IMAutomator on a website or two - I can't share your same opinion on the service (I was in on the Beta). There are a few things they could do to increase indexing, such as spinning content for submission.

I didn't see any backlinks generated from their service after using them for a month.

I wanted to ask you how you check your backlinks, if your hubs are actually getting any?

Do you check that metric? It's easy to do with a website that's self-hosted, but not on a web 2.0 property.

Anyhow, great tips, definitely educational!
