How To Set UP HubPages URL Tracker Referral Code Links To Earn More On Hub Pages
88This Hub is designed to show you can generate income with your Hubpages URL Tracker code and how you can use your URL tracker code to earn more on Hub Pages from Referral links to other Hubber's pages and from what HubPages call a Lifetime Referral Bonus. HubPages help explains really clearly how to link to your own and other Hubbers pages using the 'Share It' link at the bottom of each Hub page which enables you to use a link with your own unique referrer or tracker code (url tracker) already embedded in it (you simply select the link to this hub option, and select which tracker code you want to insert in the URL you are given for the hub you want to link to - copy and paste the URL to wherever you want to use it). I will not try to ‘reinvent the wheel’ by going into more detail here on how to do this but you can see how it works by mousing over the links below and you will see that my tracker code is included in the URL that appears at the bottom of your browser page.

How You Can Earn from Referral Links to other Hubbers' pages
If you want to link to another Hubbers' page from from outside of Hubpages, you find the URL of their page, then insert your tracker code as follows:
If for example, you wanted to link to my Hubpage on Brain Training, this is the URL
http://hubpages.com/hub/Does-Brain-Training-really-work
All you need to do is insert _yourcode/ (an underscore, your referrer code or URL tracker whichever you prefer to call it and then the forward slash)
so what you get is
http://hubpages.com/_yourcode/hub/Does-Brain-Training-really-work
You will earn from any adsense revenue generated by anyone who uses your link to navigate to the hubpage you have chosen to link to.

Update 31st January 2011
What is Anchor Text?
Before I go onto the next section, another hubber who left a critical comment pointed out that I had not explained what anchor text is so I hope the following will help for anyone who is unsure.
When you hear people say that their website is ranked #1 on Google, what they should actually say that their website home page, or another page on their website is ranked #1 on Google for a particular keyword or keyphrase. Of course, they might be #1 for several keywords. A Hubpage can be ranked in just the same way.
If you choose keywords that are very easy to rank for like 'mushroom asparagus soup' you will rank with no effort at all for that keyword, just by using it a few times on your hubpage - of course, as it only has 36 exact searches a month and an average return for you if someone clicked on an adsense ad for that keyphrase of just a couple of pence, it really wouldn't be worth the effort as you would get no traffic and no income from it!
For harder to rank for keyphrases, pages get ranked for those keyphrases by creating anchor text links back to their hubs or webpages that are those exact keywords - so for example, if I wanted to build anchor text backlinks to try to get this hub ranked for the keyword phrase get backlinks, I would follow the process of creating anchor text backlinks outlined below so that Google would see that other sites were linking to my hub or webpage using the phrase get backlinks and the higher the Google page rank of the page where those backlinks are placed and the higher the number of backlinks I get are two of the factors that help Google to decide where my page should appear in the rankings for that phrase because it views those links from other sites like a 'vote' for the popularity and authority of my page for that keyword phrase. So, for example if you were able to place an anchor text backlink on a site with a Google Page Rank of 6 (lucky you), this would have a lot more authority than a backlink from a blog page with a Google Page Rank of 0.
Please see my hub How To Create An Anchor Text Hyperlink to find out how to use this information to create backlinks to your hubs to build your hubpage rank.(update ends)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is how to use anchor text for your link rather than putting the URL of your page. I have chosen another hub for this example, my hub called
Drive traffic to your HubPages - automate link submssions
So you would type in the keyword phrase in your Hub that you want to be used as your anchor text, then highlight this text, go to the link symbol at the top of your editing toolbar in the capsule you are creating and click on it. Then paste the URL code for the hub you are linking to, including URL Tracker code, exactly as before into the space marked 'Link URL' and press the 'insert' button. This will create a link that looks like this:-
automate link submssions
This will link you to my Hub on automating link submissions in the same way as the other URL link did to my Hub on Brain Training and because you will put your tracker code in there, HubPages help pages state that:-
"If someone clicks on your link to a specific Hub, you are entitled to the traffic referral impressions for 120 minutes. We set this limit because there may be multiple Hubbers referring people to a particular Hub. No other tracker can replace yours during that 120 minute period. This is called the ‘first dibs’ rule."
UPDATE I have come back to add an extra piece of information here as I felt, in light of comments received on this Hub that additional clarification was required. Please use this link which goes to the specific part of HubPages Help that I hope will explain fully the point I have tried to make about referring people to other hubbers hubs and what revenue you might get from this.
Of course, you may prefer to use your main keyword or long tail keyword phrase from your hub title as your anchor text when linking to your own hubs whether from outside of hubpages or within but obviously this would be for purely link building not for the purpose of inserting your URL tracker as there is no financial benefit in doing this for your own hubs - although you may wish to see whether the strategy of adding links to your other hubs is driving traffic to them as well.
Earn from Lifetime Referral Bonuses
You can also earn from what Hubpages call a Lifetime Referral Bonus – in other words, if someone signs up to Hubpages using a link containing your referrer or tracker code, you will earn a proportion of their Adsense earnings for as long as they are a Hubpages Author.
I found that Hubpages provide a great selection of Banners that you can use wherever you like to enable people to link to the sign-up page. If you haven’t found the Banners yet, use the link below.
Update 31st January 2011. Sophie Angelique, another hubber who was kind enough to leave a (very) critical review of this hub, pointed out that I had not explained what a Banner is. If you go the the url above, you will see several examples. Banners cannot be included within your own hubpages but they can be included in other webpages that you own, for example either a blogger or a wordpress blog to refer people back to hubpages, including your tracker code for the purpose of earning a lifetime bonus as a percentage of their adsense revenue if they sign up with hubpages or a percentage of the adsense revenue from any clicks they generate in the first 120 minutes looking at hubs on hubpages . The instructions below are how to use them for this purpose. (update ends here)
In order for you to earn from anyone clicking on these Banners, you need to insert your referrer or tracker code into the embed code of the Banner.
As I am new to using HTML, I was completely at a loss as to how to do this and have had to learn for myself. To save you the trouble of finding out the long way round, here is how you do it.
Here is the HTML code for the first Banner on the Banner page
<a href="http://hubpages.com/â><img style="width: 558px; height: 69px" alt="HubPages" src="http://x.hubpages.com/x/hubpages_728-90.gif" width="558" height="69" /></a>
Insert your code in the format _yourcode/ (underscore followed by your code followed by forward slash) immediately after <a href="http://hubpages.com/
Note: - whichever banner you choose, they all start with this same bit of code so _yourcode/ goes in the same place in any of them!
So the HTML now reads:-
<a href="http://hubpages.com/_yourcode/"><img style="width: 558px; height: 69px" alt="HubPages" src="http://x.hubpages.com/x/hubpages_728-90.gif" width="558" height="69" /></a>
However, if you use this HTML as it is, the "surfer" will be taken away from your website or blog page or wherever you have inserted this code. What you really want to happen is for a new window to open so they won't navigate away from your page as you may lose them for good!! What you need to do is include the following bit of code which will make the website or page you have linked to open in a new window with your page or website still open behind it. The code you need to add is:-
target="_blank"
Insert this as follows:
<a href="http://hubpages.com/_yourcode/" target="_blank"><img style="width: 558px; height: 69px" alt="HubPages" src="http://x.hubpages.com/x/hubpages_728-90.gif" width="558" height="69" /></a>
Again, in the HTML above, yourcode is your own, unique referrer or tracker code.

Can I have more than one URL Tracker?
You may wish to set up new referrer or tracker codes to enable you to find out where your traffic (and sign-ups) are coming from and this is easy to do on your Account Page – click on URL Trackers. If you want to check if you have had any referrals from any of your Trackers, just look at the column headed Signups!
Sorted!!

This new hubber loves your informative hub! I'm trying to make a referral tracker for my profile page. What happens when I've done exactly as you say, and it's still not working? Is the "my code" part of the tracker, the default code that I already have? Is that what I insert? I tried it, and that didn't work either. I'm still not getting it in Southern California. Help! And, thanks. I'm definitely going to follow you!
Thank you for such useful info,I am serious on making thousand online!TQ
Super-Great Hub! I will be following you ! Learned alot---Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my God! This is a lot of information. I’ll have to process it little by little. I can tell strait away that you really have valuable tips that set your help hub aside from all the other “earning tips” hubs that have information that everybody knows already. Thanks!
Wow! There is so much I don't know about HubPages. I'm glad you wrote this hub. I have learned a lot from you. Thank you.
God Gracious me! What a hub Allison! Thank you so much for sharing this information. It's absolutely gold!!
Thanks, this was really helpful. I just put the banner on my blog.
Thanks for the newbie info!
This is a first-rate information. Thanks for sharing it to
Excellent hub ,Thanks for the post
Hi Excellent hub with lot of information about improving hubs...... thanks a lot
Hi :)
Very useful information!
Back-linking, and associated subjects, are problem areas for me. I can't seem to get my head around them :) :)
Anyway, having read this hub, I have just joined Xomba ~ and I have submitted a brief article.
I have added my profile page URL to my signature, but I did not link to any of my hubs in my article, even though I had some that were specifically related.
This was because their rules state that 'Bookmarks may not be created solely to link to your content from other sites. A link to your other work as part of a signature at the end of an article is acceptable.'
But I am wondering if I have understood this correctly?
Any advice would be welcomed :)
Thanks!
Perfect - all set and thanks again!
Alison, thank you so much. Do I need to add the /user/new at the end? Or can I just use http://hubpages.com/_xxxx. xxxx being my tracker code. You are so helpful.
Very helpful Hub! Do you were I can find instructions to add the "Join HubPages Here!" referral link on my Hubs as well? Your instructions on how to insert HTML code for Banners on external sites was so helpful, but adding the link on one of my Hubs is still a challenge for me. Do I setup a referral tracker for Hub Pages only? Thank you.
Excellent! This clears things up greatly for me. Thanks!
ahhh, thank you!
Very helpful! I was rusty on this and actually had someone have to ask me how they can sign up under me. No other hubber's pages were as helpful as this one, and I visited several. Thanks so much!
@Alison, it's alright. I just get very frustrated when I don't understand what is being said and I struggle for hours to get it right. I'm the impatient sort! In any event, I don't doubt your intention to help. And I think you've very popular and very liked! And that counts for a lot to show your helpful spirit. :)
@Alison. Well, I have spent close on two months trying to find out how to do it. It's always easy to understand something when one knows what someone means... I note that the third or forth person down says it took her an hour and a half to work it out. A clearly written hub means one can just follow the steps and do it. In any event, just in case I forget again how to do it, I wrote a very simple plain English hub to remind me how to do it! :)
The problem with ALL these explanations of how to use trackers and referrals is that every single one of them is clear as mud. They all make the same mistake. They use genre vocabularly that nobody understands, and the fact that you just quote hub pages means that you don't understand it either, or you don't know how to express what you know how to do. An example, you use the words 'anchor text.' I can give you a 100% guanrantee that very few readers would know what it is.
Here's another paragraph of yours...
"However, in order for you to earn from anyone clicking on these Banners, you need to insert your referrer or tracker code into the embed code of the Banner."
What Banner? You don't explain where the banner is located, what it looks like, what it is used for, etc.
The problem with most of these articles that supposedly explain to others how to do something is that they ssume a base knowledge that isn't there. They also assume that people understand genere words - which they don't.
Ironically, the only people who understand the genre the words are the ones who don't need to read the article.
If you read my article on how to create a hub, it does well because I do not assume that people know what I'm talking. I explain every little thing. If I mention the word, 'capsule', I then explain what a capsule is and where it can be found.
http://hubpages.com/hub/Create-a-Hub-page
One day, when I finally understand referrals, I am going to write about it because I can assure you that there isn't anything on hub pages that makes it easy to understandd.
hey Alison. Thanks for sharing this. You have created so many hubs in a short period of time. Great work.
This was very helpful. Thank you so much. There's so much to learn, trying to not get overwhelmed.
Great hub. This helped me out a lot. Thanks
I love you:) information about tracker is the best:) I didn't know about that now I can use it :) thanks to you. It's really good hub. I love it and I'm your fan from now. Great!
I'm book-marking this :)
Really useful - I didn't realise some links didn't automatically have my tracker in them. I've now changed them! Many thanks! Wriggly
thank Alison! it is really help full articles, keep writing.
Alison your hub is very helpful. I am learning so much here. Thank you.
It's amazing to me that you have learned so much about computers and HTML in three months. This is definitely a great resource!

Thank you so much this information is really usefull.
I tried to do the banner thing and it would not let me add my tracker
Hey,
I have been here on HubPages from last two years. However, I was not aware about it's referrer code and how we can generate revenue through it. It's going to be quite useful for me.
Thanks... :)
Thanks Alison - all these months and I didn't even know that those banner ads were there. Duh!
these tips are amazing. bookmarked the hub and going to read the other hubs you suggested.
Common sense, well put. This stuff is finally trickling into my brain. Thanks, great hub!
Great information! I am excited to try this. Thanks!
Very informative! Never knew such a thing as this existed in Hubpages. I'll look at the help page you suggested. Thanks for sharing.
Great advice Alison. It's good to see all of the MSI opportunities here at HubPages. Every little bit certainly does count.
Thanks so much for this-- one to bookmark and re-study. I just recently learned how to make a referral code link (took me awhile). I missed this when it first came out.
Once again, many thanks! How did you manage to learn so much about HubPages in so little time?? (Reading the ubPages Help and putting into practice perhaps?)
Your tips is useful for me. I just know how to use my tracking code in my link, so it is help me to do that. Thanks for sharing.
Alison -another great one - Thanks! Voted you up, and am now following you.
Probably one of the best written Hubs I have read. Voted you up. Thank you. I have started searching Hubpages before Google for "how to stuff" now...you guys are amazing. Thank you.
Thank you! I will check out that hub of yours too. You explain things very clearly which is great for someone like me who is new to all of this. Some other hubs on these topics, although very informative, assume the reader has a higher level of internet knowledge than I do!
Thanks Alison, brilliant hub. Thank you so much for providing examples of exactly where you put your URL code into another code. I was completely confused by this until I read your hub. Still have so much to learn though. .. just about to go find out what Digg and Stumble Upon are that everyone keeps mentioning.
Thanks for this. I'll have to give it a go (if I ever get around to it). Hopefully I can find some good gluten free articles that synthesise the plot of my hubs! GREAT HUB! THUMBS UP!!! WOO HOO!
I am so new to this, I am not understanding any of this. Maybe im slow but I think I need a tutor. Where do you get the code? How do you choose whos hubs to paste links to? Im not gonna give up. Thanks For Sharing.
very useful info
Hello Alison. Would you please explain the structure of the sign up referral encourager you have at the end of this hub. I would like to add one of these to the end of my hubs but I am confused about what link I need to include to do this. I have read lots of articles on tracking but I am still confused. I am new to HubPages by the way in case you can't guess.
I think struggling through something on your own really makes a difference when then explaining it to others later. You've done really well learning a lot on your own - and well done on that html learning for the HubPages banner!
Muchas Gracias! Am going to bookmark this as I am such a dud when it comes to html I will need to print it out and read as I do it!! Thanks again.
This has to be the best article I have found on this subject. In the past I brought quite a few Hubbers into Hubpages. I will be sending them via my link next time. I really like Hubpages, as I feel it has a great community here, and it performs in many ways, including seo, driving traffic to my blog.
I am just about finished writing a course on Making Money with Hubpages, and I will be adding it to the rescource centre.

The SEO DAD,
Excellent tips here on directing referrel traffic to HubPages—was doing it with the links, but didn't know there were banners I could use on my blog. Thanks.
Good to know--I was wondering what that was for/how it was used.
Very informative. I greatly enjoyed this. Thanks!
Thanks for the info as I am having a difficult time getting everything set up correctly
Thank you for all the useful info. I plan to try it out and see if I can do it and get it to work for me. Thanks again.
Very helpful and informative. Thank you.
Wow. This one's very informative specially to newbies like me. Thanks for this useful guide! Voted up!
Very nice hubpage
Excellent advice, I still not to sure what i am trying to do so any kind of information is worth a try. Thank you very much.
I'm with SaMcNutt above. Having just recently found HubPages, and not really knowing what I'm doing yet, this is of immense interest and help to me.
Thanks for thinking of those who come after you.
I have only begun to use Hupages and this Hub made me realize how little I know about all the things you can do with this. Thank you for the information.
is it possible to track my referral's adsense revenue. please give answer for me if you know about this.
Thank you for this wonderful hub.
great information check my hubs
Thanks for the informations. I will use them for sure.
I was not aware of this could be done. Thanks for the information. I am sure a lot of us will put it to good use.
These are good tips, thanks for sharing.
Very informative. Actually this is what I am looking for all the time. I'll copy and put the code to my blog. Thank you very much.

Wow I didnt know this. There is so many opportunities to make money at Hubpages! Thanks a lot of sharing. This is good stuff! useful ++
Thanks for the simple but detailed instructions, never know you could earn from other hubs until now, thanks.
Thank you for such a great hub. I am going to add the banners to my blogs. Thanks again.
Great hub and very useful, thanks for the content!
Nice details, especially for those who want to make full use of their time in Hubpages. Thumbs up.
This hub is so great and useful and im very proud you wrote it
That's cool! I never knew there was such a feature on HubPages.
thankyou for your hub giving more detail about referral trackers - I really couldn't make much sense from the brief outline HP gave. I'm still a bit confused about how I get credit for referral - is it when someone signs up to HP when I link to someone else in HP and a new user signs up because of them? How does HP know that this happened?
Great information here. I wasn't aware that if you linked to another persons Hub from your hub you would earn adsense for 120 minutes. That's excellent information.
Thanks.
I've been on HubPages longer than you have, but this is such a revelation. I read every hub about earning money from HubPages that I come across, and this one is totally new to me. Good thing I discovered bookmarking some time ago!
Thanks a lot for sharing this well detailed information.
I think my head hurts now! I know this is important, so i suspect I will need to read it over more than once to fully grasp the process. Thanks for putting that in print.
Great info. I bookmarked.
Thanks for such great info.I am bookmarking it
Thank you
It is always a better practice to refer good things. Being in a self circle never lets grow. Nice post.
Thanks Alison! :) This is surely helpful. This lifetime referral is surely great for building links and at the same time for ranking purposes. Thanks!
Nice one! You can't make smart decisions unless you have smart data to work from. Thanks
Before now, i have been trying to make my lifetime referal work but to no avail. Thanks for this work.
Cheers!
ya baby you rock - I did not know how to do that. It's like a whole new opportunity unveiled - Thanks
Great info, The idea on embedding the code while still using anchor text is outstanding!
Is that why my hub tanked on the first day? I self referred my url to my other hubs - *#&^$*#^&!!! Still trying to get the hang of this.
I thought if self referred with url tracker I get my regular $$ PLUS the extra 15% for the next 120 minutes taken from Hubpages' share of AdSense revenue.
new writter.thanks for the info.
I never used this tracking code, actually I was too lazy to implement it in my hubs.thanks for writing the first ever hub on hub url tracking. Thanks Alison :)
Wow I actually understood every single word. This has got to be a first and a credit to your writing style. Thank you very much. Needless to say I am bookmarking this one!
Alison Graham,
I went to Help, like you said, no point in reinventing the wheel :) It was a little confusing because when they wrote that Help section, it was referring to the old Share button they had, which I don't recall using much, but according to what it said, it would allow you to input your referral code. Now the new Share button just goes directly to a list, like Twitter, Facebook, etc., and when you select one of those, it pops up and then you can enter a comment and it posts. There may be some on there that give you the place to add your code, like the way Twitter is set up. But with Facebook, there's no way to get to the URL to alter it. Anyway, good discussion.
And I came back here to let you know, it works! I just added a banner to my blog and added my referral code just like you advised. Thank you.
Oh and FYI, I learned that the Widget automatically includes your referral tracker, so no need to do it manually.
Thank you for your attentiveness. Kind Regards
Alison Graham, Oh yes, I signed up for AdSense, Amazon and eBay right away. I'm set there. I do have another question. When we click the Share link (I like to share on Facebook), do we get referral credit if someone clicks the link we share? Thanks in advance, Kind Regards
I read it again and see you ended it with where to find out how many folks signed up and then right below that it says those earnings go into Google AdSense, so disregard that one question of mine!
Alison Graham, Thank you. I've been using referral links for my own Hubs for awhile, but I didn't know about using them for other's Hubs. Great idea! And banners, another good idea. Thanks for the code. Is there code for the widget too or is it the same? I have a widget on my blog I'd like to add the code to. Also, where do we check our earnings? I've always wondered this. Kind Regards
Very good hub!
It really clears everything about referrer codes.
Thank you very much!
Very Great hub Alison!
A+ Hubber once again :)
RomperHubber
Where do you put the html banner code once you have it ready?
Read about 6 posts before noticing yours. YOU are the one who has answered my question most directly. I thank you.
Great hub! I just used your step-by-step instructions to make my first banner. Thanks ;)
Very good hub.
Wow, Alison, great info! Thanks so much for sharing; I had tried to do the referral codes a couple of times and gave up because I couldn't get it to work. Great Job, rating up for you and bookmarking it so that I can refer back to it. :)
great hub read well detailed work thanks

Hi Pennylu, when you are using your tracker in a hub address it goes after the hubpages.com - same in your profile, put it at the end after hubpages.com
Try it, if your profile appears when you put the url with the tracker code into the browser window and go to the page that way, it has worked (even though your tracker is not showing in the address that comes up).
If you want to check it, take a look at your referral tracker traffic views, take a note of the number, do the above step again to view your profile page and go back and check the number again (after refreshing the page) - it should have gone up by one.
If when you do the above steps the profile page does not come up, drop me a line through the contact me link and send me the tracker code and I will check it out for you.
Hope this helps, Alison
