Hubpages, the Next Step, Building a Niche Wordpress Website, Some Tips on Building A Website From Scratch

By Alison Graham

If you have never tried building a wordpress website, how to build a Wordpress website sounds pretty scary! My first six months on HubPages has flown by and I have been learning from other Hubbers and slowly building my Adsense and Amazon earnings. Hubpages is an absolutely fantastic way to get started earning online and what you learn about researching keywords for your Hubpages topics, laying out your Hubs and promoting them once you have written them are all excellent grounding for the next step – building a Website from scratch and using everything you have learned on Hubpages to create a niche website for yourself and earn money from Affiliate programs, Adsense, Amazon or a combination of any or all!

This sounded really scary to me at first, but I am really glad I took the plunge and found it was not too difficult at all to build a website from scratch. I have used Wordpress for the sites I have set up, using only free themes (a ‘theme’ is what each style of Wordpress site is called, some are premium, some are free).

Now, I now have an article directory and of the few niche websites I have set up, two which are doing nicely and one which last month (October 2010) earned me half of what I earned from ALL my hubs put together and so far this month has earned me two thirds of the amount I have earned in total from ALL my hubpages – so it is well worth doing.

Choosing a domain name for your website

The domain name is the 'address' of your website and the advice I have read is to try to create a domain name that is as close to a perfect match for your main keyword phrase as you can get (in exactly the same way as you choose a title for your hubpages articles to reflect the main keyword you have researched for your hub).

So, if I had researched a keyword ‘Blue Furry Widgets’ and decided that this was the keyword phrase that had good traffic, low competition and good Adsense cpc (the cost per click on a Google Adsense advert for that keyword phrase) and I could find a few other keywords related to ‘Blue Furry Widgets’ for the main keyword on the other pages of my website (for example, Blue Furry Widgets Gifts for Men, Cheap Blue Furry Widgets, Celebrity Blue Furry Widgets – you get the idea) as well as having some excellent affiliate products and/or amazon products that I could also monetize the site with, I would head on over to www.prouddomains.com or www.godaddy.com and see whether www.bluefurrywidgets.com was available.

If not, I would see whether .net or .org was available or a domain name using bluefurrywidgets with hyphens between each word or perhaps bluefurrywidgetsreview or bluefurrywidgetsshop – anyway, you get the idea!

It is really easy to purchase a domain name and that is the first hurdle!

Choosing hosting for your website

I use Hostgator and this is really easy to use and understand (and cheap as with the hosting package I have, it only costs $9.95 per month to have unlimited websites as you register your first domain with them and then when you want to set up a second one, you add it to the same account as an add-on website. This makes it really cheap to have as many websites as you like – but don’t get too carried away, remember, you have to promote them too.

What Would YOU Like To Learn About Next?

I would love to hear about anything you would like to learn with regard to making money online. Is there something you have found hard, like keyword research, setting up a website, etc. Is there something that you have not been able to find out how to do with regard to your Hubpages articles or WebPages?

HubPages learning center is an amazing resource that will help you to improve your hubs. You can also check out answers in the forums or ask a question yourself in the 'need help' section where experienced hubbers are always ready to answer your questions with advice that will set you on the right track.

Thanks DuchessDuCaffeine, it is really nice to hear that you find my articles helpful.

I have to say that since I joined hubpages my focus has changed to building my own sites (using the information from Paul mentioned in this article) - I am currently earning about half of a full time income each month from adsense and anticipate a full-time income by the beginning of 2012

Hello Alison, I am slowly getting my feet wet on the internet but every time I learn something new, I end up with more questions! Your articles are very well-written and extremely helpful; I am a fan :)

I've been writing all my life (on paper) but the internet is just crazy; and it's over-flowing with opportunity and fun. I call it the Las Vegas of the writing world.

I signed on with HubPages as a place to be surrounded by fellow writers and imagine my surprise when I discovered there might be spending money to be made!

Hi Muwanwella, thanks for your comments and glad you are finding the 'How to build a wordpress website guide' useful - Paul is a great teacher.

No chance of me becoming a guru(!!!) but I do enjoy passing on the knowledge I have gained, it is a real pleasure. All the best with your writing, Alison

Hi Alison,

What I meant in my comment was that I wanted to finish reading all your hubs written on that subject. Printer's devil appeared there.

Hi Alison,

Since you sent me the free e-book ‘From Zero to Website’, I kept on reading it. It is of great value.Thanks.

Before I go in for a website, I want to finish all your hubs written related to this topic. You explain them in simple language. At the end of this hub you say that you are at beginner level. Write everything what you know about now. When you become an expert we will not be able to understand a thing. That usually happens to all Gurus.

Good luck to you.

Hi Peter, the free wordpress website guide tells you all you need to know to set up your wordpress site - and yes, it is pretty easy to get a site set up using only free themes (templates) and so on. I am going to be running a series of posts about wordpress plugins on my new blog http://howdoifindouthowto.co.uk so please check it out.

Plugins help you to accomplish what you want to achieve with your wordpress site, the ones I use are all free and help with adsense placement, SEO, social media and so on. If you need some help (although I am a very long way from being an expert) please send me a message through the contact me button above (or if you download the guide, you will get my contact details anyway).

Glad I found you. I am exactly at this phase and looking to start a wordpress site. Is it really that easy to create your own site without hours and hours of learning? Major stumbling blocks or frustrations?

Hi Terry, always great to have an unbiased, personal recommendation from someone who has made a comment so thank you and glad that you feel the same as me that the Leo and Paul membership site is the best online learning resource if you really want to earn money online.

Welcome to HubPages Terry, I look forward to reading your first Hub.

Hi Alison, I have just recently joined Paul and Leo's membership site myself and what you write here, really is the true side of how these guys will do what ever it takes to make sure that you succeed.

Their back up support to questions raised, tend to be resolved with a personalized video and if your still unsure, just ask again, but to be perfectly honest, you probably won't need to.

Paul and Leo have invested so many months, getting the site to run just right, as well as continually adding really superb excellent quality content and as for the videos, well I am totally blown away.

To say that they really do know their stuff is an understatement and I for one... won't be going anywhere else.

Great hub Alison.

All the best,

Terry

Thanks Julie, Leo and Paul's website is certainly a great place to really learn how to earn - not a get rich quick scheme, but learning how to lay solid foundations - I look forward to buying you a drink (or three) when we get to our first $1,000!

A great hub with excellent info - as you know, you're selling coals to Newcastle as far as Paul and Leo are concerned, being a founder member myself too! The info and resources offered there are second to none and will help any newcomer advance in leaps and bounds in their online business!

Hi allpurposeguru - I know what you mean - I only started out online in April and already I am saying, "If only I knew then what I know now!" Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I hope this hub will come in useful to you in the future.

Hi Motherbeastly, I know what you mean about the keyword research - I don't want to sound as if I am giving you the hard sell but the Leo and Paul membership site I gave you details of above has a whole course on keyword research, looking at all the factors you need to consider and all using FREE ONLINE RESOURCES - I found it really helpful it is done by Shane Melaugh who I respect enormously!

I have a bunch of blogs and write for a bunch of sites. I quickly learned about the importance of keywords for individual posts, but the idea of unifying keywords for an entire site escaped me. I think if I can come across something like this a year ago, I would have planned a much better course for myself. I doubt if it makes any sense for me to start another site just now, but I have bookmarked your article in case it ever does. Thanks for writing it.

Great this. I am still struggling with sorting out good keywords and how best to make money. I am still finding it too much fun just scribbling to get organised. Once I am I will follow this rather closely.

Thanks Crewman6, your comment has helped me as I really want feedback on what people want to learn about as I would like to provide short training courses on those subjects. Thanks for the feedback.
